Dhaka, 23 March: Like previous years Bangladesh Meteorological Department observed the World Meterologecal Day with befitting manner today, Thursday (23-3-2017). Acting Secretary, Ministry of Defence Janab Akhter Hussain Bhuiya has inaugurated the ceremony as chief guest at Meteorological Department, Agargaon in the capital.
Different activities have been taken up to observe this day at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) Headquarters, Dhaka along with its all significant branch offices within the country. An exhibition of meteorological instruments and a documentary film on related issues will be arranged at the Headquarters for the public. A technical session will also be conducted by the Officer’s Association of BMD. Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television broadcast special discussion programmes separately considering the significance of the day. Moreover, the operational units and Radar stations of Dhaka, Cox’s Bazar, Khepupara, Rangpur and Moulvibazar was open for the public.
The theme of the World Meterologecal Day for this year is ‘Understanding Clouds’. Clouds play a vital role in the climate activities and water cycle. By understanding the clouds properly it would be possible to provide accurate weather forecast, also it would be feasible to take proper steps to minimize the effects of climate change and proper distribution of water resources will be in hand.
On 23 March, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and its 191 member states and territories including Bangladesh observe this day commemorating the emergence of WMO as a specialized agency of the United Nations. This year it is being observed with particular emphasis on the theme selected by the WMO.
